Madame Morton pointed out that the British Government had called on the current Belarusian authorities to end the repression of protesters and independent media and to bring to justice those responsible for violations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <em>The British Government is interested in increasing support and developing civil society in Belarus, independent media, and educational institutions in Belarus<\/em> \u2013 says in her letter Madame Morton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Britain was among the first countries <strong>to react swiftly to the repression<\/strong> following the presidential election. The British Government is promoting the consideration of Belarus issues in <strong>United Nations agencies<\/strong> to support the economic development of Belarus, the leadership potential of women, and the protection of vulnerable groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United Kingdom also intends to support the academic community of Belarus:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <em>We are aware of the difficulties faced by students and teachers who are persecuted for their desire for democracy in Belarus. We are working on expanding support for students and educational institutions in Belarus and looking for opportunities to increase the number of Chevening scholarships for Belarusians<\/em>, \u2013 <strong>Minister<\/strong> for European Neighborhood and American Affairs <strong>Wendy Morton<\/strong> reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The support of other Governments<\/strong> shows that the actions of Belarusians in the struggle for <strong>democracy<\/strong> are visible and important for other democratic States.
